Seventeen years since his debut, Human Nature, Michel Gondry is now an Academy Award-winning visualist and a cult entity admired for his ceaseless heart and imagination. Although I am 6'5," I'm not unusually wide. It's also worth mentioning that the C-230's interior is narrow. The all-in-one radio/CD/cassette/cell phone pad appears clever, but is almost impossible for the driver to safely work while on the road. At this position, the fingers reach for the cruise control stalk when wishing to change lanes, which is potentially dangerous, since a flick up or down on the cruise sets the speed. I, and many others, favour 10 and two o'clock. Germans are taught to hold the wheel at the nine and three o'clock positions. The Sport model's firmedup suspension offers fine control on smooth roads, but still allows for a lot of disruptive wheel travel on bumps. The steering feels heavy oncentre, but then over-responds to a firm twist. The cheapest six-cylinder Benz sedan is the more polished $49,950 C280.Ĭompared to the BMW's impeccable road manners, the C-230 showed its age, feeling like it had a case of creaky knees: Having recently gushed over the new BMW 3 Series sedans, I held the similarly priced ($44,900 to start) 328i up as a yardstick. It was also slathered with cheap-looking "carbonoptic" trim around the door frames and on the dashboard. My Sport model ($45,650 plus almost $5,000 in options) was fitted with 16-inch wheels and performance Pirelli P-6000 tires and handsome rocker-panel cladding, drawing admiring comments from my Euro import-driving neighbours. (The transmission's electronics are programmed to warm up the catalytic converter as quickly as possible for low exhaust emissions.) To make it worse, the transmission holds first and second gears longer until the engine warms up, adding jerkiness to the din. The growly supercharged four rattles and whines after a cold start. The C-230K is so good, in fact, that it pretty much obviates the need for the much pricier C-280 which, on a roughly equipment-adjusted basis costs an extra $6,100.įirst impressions are the longest lasting, and Mercedes' C-230 Kompressor makes a lousy one each morning. Its solid structure and the confidence with which it tackles every driving manoeuvre is as evident here as in any other, more expensive Benz. Gruff engine aside, though, the Kompressor offers you the full Mercedes experience, starting at a reasonable $37,950. Starting in second also attenuates the engine's rough, growly exhaust note under acceleration. Second gear-start "winter" mode most of the time — the 2.3 L supercharged four pulls as hard in second (torque is 200 lbft, 5 more than the costlier C280) as most cars do in first. The five-speed's one-two shift is jerky, too, especially at part throttle. The traditional Mercedes gated shifter (still my favourite way to swap cogs in an automatic) has been dumbed down: fourth, third and second gears are now in a straight line, making selecting the proper gear more difficult. The way-cool but ultimately too-slow single wiper had a hard time keeping up with heavy rainfall. BAS, as it's called, is standard on all C-Class sedans. And, try as I might to fool it by jabbing at the pedal, it never kicked in when I didn't want it to. The system works brilliantly, besting even my finest threshold-braking efforts. The brakes are amazing, and in addition to being fitted with standard ABS, also come with Brake Assist, which senses when a driver wants a panic stop and automatically applies full braking force. Its adaptive five-speed automatic snaps off perfect full-throttle upshifts and its front double-wishbone and rear multi-link suspension keep it pinned down in fast corners. With 37 more horsepower than its C-230 predecessor, the Kompressor charges down the road with the same authority as any bigger, more powerful Mercedes. Some nagging reminders that you're driving a bargain Benz: the steering wheel isn't adjustable unless you spend $240 and the trunk pops open with a clang — no smooth hydraulic struts here.īut time behind the wheel quickly has you forgetting such cheapnesses. I was expecting to dislike the multi-functional tape/CD/radio/cellphone head unit, but found it surprisingly easy to use, with excellent FM reception. Its interior (nicely finished in synthetic leather with walnut accents on my tester) is a tight fit for four. The C-Class is a five-year-old design and its shape is now the least elegant of any Mercedes — a situation not helped by the dark-tinted tail-lamps and new rocker panels added last year. Although the current Mercedes-Benz C-Class is, judging by the spy photos and stories I've been seeing with increasing frequency, on its last legs, the latest addition to the line, the 185 hp C-230 Kompressor, proves there's a lot of life still left in the platform. Show and Tell is a fun and easy activity for kids that comes with tons of learning benefits. Let’s take a close look at the Show and Tell activity, from why teachers do it, to how parents can help their kids prepare. Have you ever wondered why Show and Tell is such an elementary school staple? Is it just a fun activity, or is it actually an important part of the lesson plan? One of the simple joys of childhood that many parents remember and children look forward to is show and tell. There are fall festivals, holiday performances, field days, school picnics, and learning to read just to name a few. There are so many things that both children and parents look forward to in the elementary school years. Make sure to shut the engine down and remove it from operation until you can get it repaired.ĭepending on the engines you use in the oilfield and agricultural industries, testing the engine’s compression can also help determine if your valve stem seals are deteriorating. That means the oil is getting pulled past the seal and into the valve guide. If the seal is faulty, you may once again see blue-tinted smoke when the engine begins to run. When the engine is at rest, high vacuum levels can cause the oil to build around the heads of the valve system while the valve is closed. Pay attention to your machines if they ever idle. While oil leaks are often a clear warning of faulty valve seals, they may not always be visible, so don’t rely on this as a guaranteed warning because the oil could be burning off. You can make this part of your regular maintenance schedule. Make sure to check the engine’s oil level with a dipstick, and refer to your oil log to see if the fluid levels differ. Unburned fuel in the exhaust skyrockets the converter’s operating temperatures, which can cause the converter to overheat and create a blocked exhaust. Burning oil increases emissions and can contaminate the catalyst. When oil leaks or burns at higher rates, the seal no longer controls the oil flow. If you notice you’re going through more oil than usual, it can be another indication of a bad seal. Be aware of specific machine movements that cause more smoke than usual. The excessive smoke may also come in more consistent waves as the engine runs for long periods. However, when you start seeing it last longer than usual or appear a different color, you know a faulty seal may be the cause. The bluish smoke, which is burned oil, signifies that the engine needs a new seal, even if it clears after several minutes of running the engine.ĭepending on the machines and equipment you use, smoke is often a common form of exhaust. If this happens, it means the residual oil is passing down through the damaged seal and into the combustion chamber. When you start the engine, you may also see blue-tinted smoke appear from the exhaust. Leftover oil will then settle at the top of the valve cover head. Once you start the engine, the seal will contract. After your machine hasn’t run for a while - even overnight - the seal is now cool. One of the best ways to tell if you have a faulty valve seal is to conduct a cold engine test. Six ways to assess whether you have a faulty seal on your hands include: A damaged seal can cause engine oil flooding that will lead to engine failure. However, excess oil can result in carbon buildup, which can lead to many issues, such as:Įssentially, valve stem seals prevent oil from entering the combustion chamber from the cylinder head. Otherwise, too little oil can cause various components to wear as parts rub together. A controlled amount of oil is crucial in maintaining adequate lubrication.
